Put the main document first

Drag the file that readers should see first to the top of the list; page order in the result follows the list exactly.

Unlock protected files beforehand

Password-protected PDFs can't be combined until the password is removed, so run them through Unlock PDF first.

Compress after merging, not before

Merging scanned files adds their sizes together. Compress the combined PDF once at the end to get the smallest attachment.
